The Storm is Coming

As I was getting ready this morning, the last thing I expected was to hear the words “Winter Storm Watch.” And not just any storm – we’re talking about snow totals of up to 18 inches, coupled with a potential inch of ice. No, thank you!

Preparing for the Worst

The thought of that much snow and ice is enough to make anyone want to hibernate. If you’re like me, the first thing that comes to mind is how to prepare. Here are a few tips to get through the storm safely:

  • Emergency Kit: Make sure you have flashlights with fresh batteries, a first-aid kit, and any necessary medications.
  • Food and Water: Stock up on non-perishable items like canned goods, bottled water, and snacks.
  • Warmth Essentials: Have plenty of blankets, and ensure your heating system is working properly.

Staying Safe and Finding Joy

Of course, a storm of this magnitude isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a reminder to stay safe. Roads will be treacherous, power outages are a real possibility, and shoveling heavy, wet snow can be downright dangerous. Remember to:

  • Pace yourself when shoveling snow to avoid overexertion.
  • Dress in layers to stay warm and protect against frostbite.

But let’s also look for a silver lining. A snow day can mean extra time with family, a chance to binge-watch your favorite shows, or an excuse to finally bake that recipe you’ve been saving. And there’s something undeniably magical about watching snow blanket the world outside, even if it does come with a side of ice.

  1. Wow! That’s really neat! I love this story and helpful information. I’m in Oklahoma and we too have a winter storm advisory. But, in my situation with hunting that’s a good thing! How many inches of snow are you expecting?

    1. The latest forecast showed the Kansas City Metro area receiving up to an inch of ice before 4-8 inches of snow, with northern Missouri potentially getting 12 inches or more. However, we all know Midwest weather—it will likely change ten times before it hits us.

      1. That’s where I’m going to be in the panhandle of Oklahoma hunting ducks! We’re supposed to get a flurry too! Be safe out there!
