The To-Do List Task That Never Gets Done

Daily writing prompt
Something on your “to-do list” that never gets done.

We all have that one task on our to-do list that never seems to get checked off. No matter how hard we try, it lingers—haunting us like a ghost of responsibilities past. For me? It’s laundry.

Laundry: The Never-Ending Cycle

Just when I think I’ve conquered the mountain of clothes, another pile appears. It’s as if the laundry basket is a bottomless pit, refilling itself the moment I dare to relax. And asking for help? That’s a risk I’m not always willing to take—unless I want my whites to come out a lovely shade of pink.

Like the time my well-meaning husband decided to surprise me by doing a load himself. I appreciated the effort—until I pulled my favorite white T-shirt out of the dryer…now a soft pastel pink, thanks to a rogue red sock. Lesson learned: appreciation and laundry supervision go hand in hand!

Why Do We Put Certain Tasks Off?

It’s not just about laundry. Whether it’s organizing a cluttered closet, scheduling that long-overdue appointment, or responding to emails, some tasks never seem urgent enough—until they become unavoidable.

Procrastination often happens because:

  • The task feels overwhelming.
  • We get distracted by more enjoyable activities.
  • There’s no immediate consequence for delaying it.

How to Tackle the Never-Ending To-Do List

If you, too, have a never-ending task that keeps getting pushed to “tomorrow,” here are a few strategies that might help:

Break It Down – Instead of thinking about laundry as one giant chore, I tackle it in smaller steps—sorting one day, washing the next, folding while watching TV.

Set a Timer – Giving myself just 10-15 minutes to start a dreaded task often gets the momentum going.

Make It Fun – Podcasts, music, or a little reward at the end make even the most tedious chores more enjoyable.

What’s Your “Never-Ending” Task?

Now it’s your turn! What’s the one thing on your to-do list that never seems to get done? Do you have any tricks for staying on top of it? Share your struggles (and solutions!) in the comments—I’d love to hear them!
