How to Explore New Books and Genres

Daily writing prompt
What books do you want to read?

If you’re anything like me, the start of a new year or season feels like the perfect opportunity to dive into a fresh stack of books. But how do you decide what’s worth your time? With so many options available, curating a reading list can feel overwhelming. Here’s how I tackle the question: “What books do I want to read?”—and how you can, too!

1. Explore Different Genres

The world of books is vast, and there’s something for everyone. Do you love the thrill of suspense? Try diving into a mystery novel that keeps you guessing until the last page. Prefer stories that tug at your heartstrings? Romance or historical fiction might be your go-to. Exploring genres you’ve never read before can open your mind to new ideas and perspectives.

2. Follow Recommendations

Friends, family, and even online communities are fantastic sources for book suggestions. Check out trending titles on book review sites or social media platforms. Have a friend who’s always raving about their latest read? Borrow their copy or snag your own. Some of my best book discoveries have come from someone else’s excitement.

3. Revisit Old Favorites

Sometimes, the best book to read is one you’ve already enjoyed. Revisiting a beloved classic or a book that resonated with you during a specific period of your life can feel like reconnecting with an old friend. Nostalgia has a way of making books even more special the second (or third) time around.

4. Join a Book Club

Joining a book club can be a fun and interactive way to decide what to read next. Discussing books with others often provides new insights and interpretations you might not have considered. Plus, it’s a great way to stay accountable for your reading goals.

5. Set Personal Goals

Do you want to read a certain number of books this year? Or perhaps you’re aiming to read more non-fiction or finally tackle that lengthy classic you’ve been avoiding. Setting specific goals can help you stay focused and make your reading choices more intentional.

What’s on Your Reading List?

Now that I’ve shared some tips, I’d love to hear from you! What books are on your reading list? Are there any titles or genres you’re excited to explore? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and let’s inspire each other to make our next reads unforgettable.
