The Holiday Season Is Here, but It Doesn’t Feel Like It
The holiday season is in full swing. Stores are decorated with twinkling lights, holiday music fills the air, and neighbors are adorning their homes with festive decorations. Yet, despite all the signs that Christmas is near, it doesn’t feel like it.
Perhaps it’s the unusually warm weather this year, or maybe life’s daily hustle and bustle has made it harder to embrace the season. Whatever the reason, if you’re finding it hard to connect with the holiday spirit, you’re not alone.
I’ve felt it too. Just last week, I stood in my living room, staring at the boxes of ornaments I’d pulled from storage. Usually, this is my favorite part of the season—unpacking tiny treasures that hold so many memories. But this year, the excitement wasn’t there. It took some hot peppermint tea, my favorite holiday playlist, and a little patience to find that spark again.
If you’re feeling the same, here are a few ideas that might help you rediscover the magic:
1. Create a Holiday Tradition
Traditions are the glue that holds the holiday spirit together. For me, it’s baking sugar cookies with my little guy every year. The smell of vanilla and cinnamon instantly brings back memories of childhood Christmases. Maybe your tradition is stringing popcorn for the tree, hosting a holiday movie night, or writing heartfelt cards to loved ones. What tradition makes the holidays special for you?
2. Take a Step Back
It’s easy to get overwhelmed with to-do lists and endless errands this time of year. Try carving out an hour to unplug and enjoy the little things. Brew a cup of peppermint tea, light a candle, and sit by the fire (or a favorite cozy corner). When was the last time you let yourself simply be during the holidays?
3. Give Back
Few things warm the heart like helping others. This season, my family and I are planning to donate toys to a local drive. It’s a small gesture, but knowing we’re bringing joy to someone else makes the season feel more meaningful. Whether it’s volunteering at a soup kitchen or simply paying for a stranger’s coffee, acts of kindness can be the perfect remedy for holiday blues.
4. Surround Yourself with Joy
Sometimes, joy hides in the simplest places. Take a drive through your neighborhood to admire the lights or visit a local holiday market. My favorite memory this year was bundling up with my friends to see the town’s tree lighting. The laughter, the carolers, and the first sip of warm cider were like a reset button for my holiday spirit.
5. Embrace the Emotion
The holidays are about more than gifts or perfectly curated moments. They’re about connection, nostalgia, and hope. Close your eyes and think of the one thing that makes the season feel special to you—maybe it’s the sound of kids laughing in the snow or the glow of candles during a quiet evening. Hold onto that feeling and let it guide you.

The holidays don’t have to be perfect to be magical. Sometimes, they’re found in the beautifully imperfect moments when we simply pause and take it all in. Let’s make this season one to remember, one act of joy at a time.
